In this Corrosion Academy lecture Mikko Palosaari, senior application development manager in the process industry team, presents stainless steel selection principles for hydrometallurgical processes. First, an introduction to the general process steps in hydrometallurgy are conducted for metals such as copper and zinc while also covering information about future battery recycling processes. The primary part of the lecture covers material selection for hydrometallurgical process equipment. In this section the corrosion properties of leaching environments are discussed as well as erosion and erosion-corrosion resistance is covered. Also, implications for structural design are discussed while the lecture ends with potential stainless steel grades to consider for hydrometallurgical applications.
