Outokumpu Therma withstands extreme heat

Our Therma range of products is ideal when you need high-service stainless steel, which is able to withstand temperatures of over 550 °C/1020 °F. With both commodity and special heat-resistant grades, Therma products are typically used to endure extreme heat in heavy industry applications.

Therma’s ferritic products are resistant to sulfur containing hot gases and have lower thermal expansion. This makes them highly suitable if your equipment is subject to high temperatures, such as in the chemical, power and metalworking industries, and furnace technology. Therma’s austenitic products are resistant to carburizing and nitriding/low oxygen hot gas and have higher creep strength. This makes them ideal for iron, steel, and non-ferrous industries, energy conversion plants, the cement industry, automotive exhaust applications and heat treatment industry.

Therma MA grades offer longer product lifecycle

In addition to the more familiar Therma 309S/4833 and Therma 310S/4845 grades, Outokumpu has invented the heat-resistant MA (micro-alloyed) stainless to provide you with better oxidation and high temperature corrosion resistance as well as long-term creep resistance. Good abrasion resistance, makes Therma MA products suitable for use in the cement and other heavy industries, while significantly higher mechanical strength allows use of thinner gauges, for example in furnaces, to save material or bear higher loads.

Says Thérèse Sterneland, Market Development Engineer, Avesta: “A good case in point is Therma 153 MA, which has replaced a conventional 309S/4833 in the inner cover of a bell furnace. Therma 153 MA has provided the required creep strength and a protective oxide, adherent during temperature cycles. It also brings toughness and ductility at room temperature that allows some repair work when necessary.”
